Description |
Allows user to select from FIFO, LRU, and LFU page replacement strategies. User then gives a series of page requests and the AV shows the decisions made regarding page replacement. |
||||
Evaluation |
Simple to use, clearly shows the process. It would be nice if the user could pick the size of the backing memory and the buffer pool. |

Description |
A visualization tool for Minibase database traces. Probably not generally useful as an algorithm visualization tool, but for those who want to show virtual memory in action, this may help. |
||||
Evaluation |
Strengths: modifiable parameters (replacement policy, access patterns, etc.) / Weaknesses: not really an algorithm visualizer; only good for Minibase traces |

Description |
Virtual Memory Simulator is a simulator for paging systems. It includes its own scripting language, and memory usage can be seen in real-time. This package is distributed as a tarball from Fresh Meat. It has auto-configuration support for your local Linux setup. |
||||
Evaluation |
I was unable to get it to compile correctly (some files gave C errors). While it could be that this is a local problem for my system, the issue here is that it is too difficult for typical users to get this system set up. So it might or might not be a good tool, but it will need repackaging with an easier installation model to be of value to others. Either that, or it just needs to be debugged/brought up to date. |
